The rose is the favorite flower of 85% of Americans. In 1986, then President Ronald Reagan signed legislation making the rose the official National Flower of the United States. George Washington bred roses at his home. A fossilized rose, which was 35 million years old, was found in Florissant, Colorado. Over 900 acres of greenhouse roses are harvested in the United States every year. 60% of these are grown in California. Florists sell millions of roses each year in the United States. The two biggest days for sales are Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Christmas is the third highest day for rose sales.
Did you ever wonder how Sunflowers got their scientific name Helianthus? It comes from two words, Helios meaning sun, and Anthos, meaning flower. The sunflower "often" follows the sun and this characteristic are how got its name. The Sunflower is a good bee plant; ours have been covered in bees this summer. In many parts of Europe sunflowers have provided/and still provide leaves for smoking, flower buds for salads, flowers for dyes, and oil for cooking.
You must have seen mind-blowing, colorful blooms of tulips in several movies. Tulip is the world’s third most popular flower after rose and chrysanthemum. It is a cup-shaped, bright colored, elegant flower, with a smooth, green stem. Tulips have been cultivated for about 500 years. They have their origin from Central and Western Asia.

Andrea,
ReplyDeleteI did not know that the rose is the National Flow of the USA that is really cool. You can not start a sentence using a number, such as 60%, you must write out the word (Sixty percent). This was a really great paragraph on roses. :)
I learned so much about sunflowers. Don't forget what I told you about commas.
I did not know that tulips are the third most popular. I am very happy with this blog post. You did a great job. I am a little sad, you didn't write anything about my favorite flower which is also the flower for the month of January. The carnation is so pretty but don't get much notice.
Your word count is 231 words.
