LGBT Pride Month

What Is LGBT Pride Month?

This is a month dedicated to being against discrimination toward the Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transsexual people, it is also used to celebrate sexual diversity.

Stonewall Riots

On an early Saturday morning June, 28 1968 some members of the LGBT community rioted this followed a police raid in the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar in New York City. This riot and other riots were a watershed moment in modern LGBT rights movements. This also helped organize LGBT marches on a bigger public scale.

Interesting Things to Know:

* Nov 2, 1969-  Craig Rodwell, Fred Sargeant, Ellen Broidy, and Linda Rhodes proposed the first pride march in New York City

* Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations (ERCHO)

The ERCHO meeting in Philadelphia voted for the march members of the Gay Liberation Front attended the meeting and were seated as guests. They had meetings that were to organize the march and they started in January at Rodwell's apartment. It was hard getting some of the organizations to send representatives such as Gay Activists Alliance.

Brenda Howard is known as "The Mother of Pride" because of her work which was coordinating the march. She also came up with the idea for a week-long series of events around Pride Day which became the genesis of the annual LGBT Pride celebrations that are now held around the world every June. She also help make the word "Pride" be popularized with the festivals.

Pride Month

The month of June was chosen to remember the Stonewall Riots. These occurred at the end of June 1969. Many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact the LGBT community has had on the world. On several occasions, the President of the United States has officially declared a Pride Month. First, President Bill Clinton declared June "Gay & Lesbian Pride Month" on June 2, 2000. Then, in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 President Barack Obama declared June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.
