Stuff About Starfish

What Are Starfish?

Starfish are animals in the water who are shaped like a star. They belong to the Asteroidea family and are also known as "Sea Stars". They typically have 5 arms but in some cases they may have 6. The aboral or upper surface may be smooth, granular or spiny, and is covered with overlapping plates. A lot of starfish species are brightly colored with reds and oranges, although some may be blue grey and even brown.

Cool Starfish Facts

Starfish can survive up to 35 years in the wild.

Common feature for all starfish is that their body is symmetrical.

The Starfish is a carnivore ( eats meat) they eat clams, they also have two stomachs and one of those stomachs can be pushed in and outside of the body while the starfish is eating (kind of gross but cool).

Starfish mouth is located on the underside of its body.

Starfish move by using these things called tube-feet they stretch very slowly till they get somewhere.

They can be basically any size from huge to very tiny.

The starfish are prey to sea otters, rays, sharks and even seagulls.

Starfish have characteristics of both genders but can actually change gender's when they get older.

Believe it or not the name "Starfish" comes from them being shaped like a star.

They aren't even related to fish in the slightest they just couldn't name it star that would get too confusing.

If they ever loose a limb they can easily grow it back so they have a new one and that is pretty cool.

Some species of Starfish can have up to 40 arms. (talk about multi-tasking)

There are thousands of species in the Starfish family.

Even though these are living creatures they actually do not have any sort of blood.

Despite no blood they do have eyes I mean they do need to see to know where their food is.

Why I wrote About Starfish

Me and my mother went to a restaurant and they had a live Starfish in the tank along with some other really cool fish. We tried to see it move but we failed.

People Who Helped the LGBT Community

First off let me just say that this day is an amazing one and I bet we can all guess why. The Supreme court legalize same-sex marriage and that is awesome. Woo Hoo! This needs to be some sort of national holiday for the LGBT community and all of the other people whom support it. But anyways lets get back to the topics of this blog. I will talk about three people who helped the LGBT community so here we go!

Harry Hay

Harry Hay was born April 7, 1912 in Sussex England. Although he was born in England his nationality is American. Harry Hay conceived the idea of a homosexual activist group in August 1948. After signing a petition Progressive party (i don't know what that is but ok). He spoke with other gay men at a party about forming a gay support organization which is a pretty neat idea. He wanted to call the organization "Bachelors For Wallace". He got good responses and wrote organizing principles that night he called it "The Call". Although the men he asked he spoke to the following morning and they were not impressed. Over the next two years, Hay refined his idea, finally conceiving of an "international...fraternal order" to serve as "a service and welfare organization devoted to the protection and improvement of Society's Androgynous Minority", the latter being a term that he later rejected. He planned to call this organization "Bachelors Anonymous". Hay met Rudi Gernreich in July 1950, with the pair soon entering a relationship. Rudi became a financial supporter for the organization but he didn't include his name and he went by "R". On November 11, 1950 the first meeting was held. Later the name of the organization was changed to the "Mattachine Society". Harry Hay died October 24, 2002 in San Francisco he was 90 years old.

Christine Jorgensen

Christine Jorgensen was born May 30, 1926 originally named George William Jorgensen Jr. Her parents were George William Jorgensen Sr and Florence Davis Hansen. Christine was a transsexual man who wanted to become a woman. When she returned from working with the military she heard about SRS (Sexual Reassignment Surgery). She began to take female hormones She wanted to go to Sweden cause at the time that was the only place they could do SRS. On September 24, 1951, surgeons at Gentofte Hospital in Copenhagen performed an orchiectomy on her. 13 months later on In November 1952 doctors at Copenhagen University Hospital performed a penectomy on her. She then returned to the United States and eventually obtained a vaginoplasty when the procedure became available there. She entered the public eye after her transformation and encouraged other transsexual people to go through with the surgery. She died May 3, 1989 at the age of 62.

Harvey Milk

Harvey milk was born May 22, 1930 in New York. He was an American politician who was the first openly gay person to be elected to public office in California. He was not open about his sexuality and he didn't participate in civic matters until he was around the age of 40. He served almost 11 months in office and he was also responsible for passing stringent gay rights ordinance for the city. On November 27, 1978 him and the mayor were assassinated by a man named Dan White he was another cities supervisor. He was aged 48 at the time.

LGBT Pride Month

What Is LGBT Pride Month?

This is a month dedicated to being against discrimination toward the Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transsexual people, it is also used to celebrate sexual diversity.

Stonewall Riots

On an early Saturday morning June, 28 1968 some members of the LGBT community rioted this followed a police raid in the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall Inn was a gay bar in New York City. This riot and other riots were a watershed moment in modern LGBT rights movements. This also helped organize LGBT marches on a bigger public scale.

Interesting Things to Know:

* Nov 2, 1969-  Craig Rodwell, Fred Sargeant, Ellen Broidy, and Linda Rhodes proposed the first pride march in New York City

* Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations (ERCHO)

The ERCHO meeting in Philadelphia voted for the march members of the Gay Liberation Front attended the meeting and were seated as guests. They had meetings that were to organize the march and they started in January at Rodwell's apartment. It was hard getting some of the organizations to send representatives such as Gay Activists Alliance.

Brenda Howard is known as "The Mother of Pride" because of her work which was coordinating the march. She also came up with the idea for a week-long series of events around Pride Day which became the genesis of the annual LGBT Pride celebrations that are now held around the world every June. She also help make the word "Pride" be popularized with the festivals.

Pride Month

The month of June was chosen to remember the Stonewall Riots. These occurred at the end of June 1969. Many pride events are held during this month to recognize the impact the LGBT community has had on the world. On several occasions, the President of the United States has officially declared a Pride Month. First, President Bill Clinton declared June "Gay & Lesbian Pride Month" on June 2, 2000. Then, in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 President Barack Obama declared June Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.

Cool Facts

- Spain  names equal same-sex unions “matrimonio”

-
In August 2011, Sao Paulo city alderman Carlos Apolinário of the right-wing Democrats Party sponsored a bill to organize and sponsor "Heterosexual Pride Day" on the third Sunday of December. This bill was passed by the city council.

-Google marked any LGBT related search results with a rainbow colored pattern underneath them. This happened in June of 2012.

The Eiffel Tower: Facts & Info

Facts about the Eiffel Tower

  • The Eiffel Tower is made of iron and weighs around 10000 tonnes. (That's a lot just in case you did not know)
  • The Eiffel Tower was originally built as the entrance arch for the World's Fair in 1889.
  •  Around 50 tonnes of paint are added to the Eiffel Tower every 7 years to protect it from rust. (This explains a lot when you look at it it always looks so fresh)
  • It is named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company was in charge of the project.
  • The French name for the Eiffel Tower is La Tour Eiffel, it also has the nickname La dame de fer which means the iron lady
  • Not everyone liked the Eiffel Tower when it was first built, with many criticizing its bold design. (funny since now it is one of the most loved monuments in the world)
Being so popular, the Eiffel Tower design has been recreated around the world, including the half scale replica at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Nevada, USA and the full scale Tokyo Tower in Japan.

    Interesting Info

The Eiffel Tower is also a technological masterpiece in building-construction history. When the French government was organizing the International Exposition of 1889 to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution, a competition was held for designs for a suitable monument. More than 100 plans were submitted, and the Centennial Committee accepted that of the noted bridge engineer Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel’s concept of a 984-foot (300-metre) tower built almost entirely of open-lattice wrought iron aroused amazement, skepticism, and no little opposition on aesthetic grounds. When completed, the tower served as the entrance gateway to the exposition.

Today the Eiffel Tower turned 126 years old! That is just awesome it has always been one of my favorite monuments. During the weekend me and my family went up in Kings Dominion's Eiffel Tower remake!

Bed Sores (Pressure Ulcers)

Overall Definition
Also known as A Pressure Ulcer Bed sores are injuries to the skin or underlining tissue that happen when pressure and friction is applied to the area.

Common Areas
Common areas are Hips, heels and the back the the cranium (the cranium is the skull).

Stages

Stage 1
Contact with soft skin or tissue resulting in a red wound. Darker skin may not show this stage but it's color can be different from some skin tones.

Stage 2
Partial thickness in skin may result in a red wound or an blister. It also presents shiny or dry ulcer without showing some bruising.

Stage 3
Full thickness and tissue loss, Tendons and muscle are not exposed. Can include tunneling ulcers can and might be shallow.

Stage 4
Tissue loss and bone will be exposed. Can be shallow bone and tendons are exposed.

Stage 5
Tissue loss with exposed bone, tendons and muscle. Often include tunneling.

Deep tissue Injury
A purple or maroon colored of intact skin that is a result of pressure to soft tissue. Can be painful, mushy, soggy, and warmer/cooler. Can include a thin blister. Can be rapid exposing tissue.

Causes

Pressure of bone against surface of skin, only occurs if in position for a long period of time. Temperature can also cause one of these or make it worse if you are on a bed or a wheelchair. If friction is applied for a long period of time one can start to form.

Risks
People who are handicapped have a better risk of getting one the the Ulcers. Can be predicded by using the Braden Scale for Predicting Pressure Ulcer Risk it shows siz stages, the stages are cognitive-perceptual, immobility, inactivity, moisture, nutrition, friction.

How To Prevent Bed Sores

The most important care for people at risk of getting a bed sore is the redistribution of pressure so that no pressure is applied. In the 1940's a doctor invented a way so that pressure would be taken off of bed sores every two hours to prevent them from getting worse or from getting them.

Information To Know
Hospitals usually set up programs to avoid the happening or bed sores in patient who are bed ridden. They do this by turning the patient every two hours and it has been a tradition used for many years. For people with paralysis, pressure shifting on a regular basis and using a wheelchair cushion featuring pressure relief can help prevent a bed sore. Also if you control the heat being applied to the skin surface it is likely you will have a lower risk of developing a bed sore.

Treatment
Tissue should be removed with bed sores that are open and where bone, muscles and tendons can be seen. Patients cannot sit down or lay down. For people with stages five and above a gel substance will be put in and skin that has been teared apart will be stitched back together.

If you or anyone you know has a bed sore or are in concern of developing one tell your doctor.

Epimology
Each year 2.5 million people develop bed sores in just the United States. the incidence of bedsores is 0.4% to 38%; within long-term care it is 2.2% to 23.9%, and in home care, it is 0% to 17%.

This place sounds really cool and what is good about why I think it is cool because I am going there for my sister’s birthday. And we are leaving like three days so I am really excited.  And we are staying in a three bed suite with a fold out couch so if the beds are really big I will get my own. We are thinking about going up just me and my sister with our grandparents earlier then my mom and my dad so we can enjoy some things and they cannot because they’re going to get there really late. And we are only staying for like a day and a half but it will be really fun even though they have a lot of water related things we will still at least go out to the ocean. I hope we can get as much stuff that is really fun into this trip as we can we originally looked at going to stay at Virginia beach but my grandma Linda found this suite for a descent price at the landmark resort and ever since then we shifted to myrtle beach. I am really excited to finally go to Myrtle Beach everyone says it so fun and awesome I am also excited to feel the ocean breeze on my skin when I get there.  And I really hope Alyson has fun to she has been on our case about how she misses the beach and we originally were going to go a couple of days ago but my dad had an appointment for his ears so we postponed it Aly was extremely upset so we told he we would go on her birthday.
