Ulysses S Grant, Jim Crow laws, And Another Mystery Topic

Although General Grant was reported to be a small man, in actuality he was five feet, eight inches tall. This was above average for the mid-nineteenth century man, who was about five feet, seven inches. General Grant did not start life as a small baby, however, weighing ten and three quarter’s pounds at birth. Unlike many of his predecessors who were born in log cabins, Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in a small frame cottage along the banks of the Ohio River in a small village named Point Pleasant, to a leather tanner, Jesse Grant and his wife Hannah Simpson Grant on April 27, 1822. Although named Hiram, his family called him by his middle name Ulysses or Lyss for short. At the age of seven, young Ulysses nearly drowned while fishing in White Oak Creek, near his home in Georgetown Ohio. His friend and fishing partner, nine year old Daniel Ammen, reached down and pulled him to safety after a through dunking.

Jim Crow laws are laws that promoted secretion between blacks and whites.
When African Americans were considered to be citizens, a majority of the white community did not want to accept them as so. They're solution were laws called Jim Crow laws that could still allow them to reject the black society (with ideas such as segregated water fountains, busses, etc.) without technically breaking the law. An example of a Jim Crow law is no person or corporation shall require any white female nurse to nurse in wards or rooms in hospitals, either public or private, in which Negro men are placed.

The Puffer fish is a very slow and clumsy swimmer which makes them easy pickings for any potential predator.  Instead of trying to out swim these fierce predators the Blow Fish has adapted a much more unique self defense mechanism. They have an elastic stomach and the ability to ingest large quantities of water in a short order of time. The result of this behavior turns them into a large ball several times the size of their normal self.  Naturally this makes it very difficult for a normal fish to consume the Puffer Fish.

  1. Andrea,

Your paragraph on President Grant was interesting but you never mentioned that he was president or anything of the sort. You really only talked about his young life. What happened to him after he grew up???

You explained Jim Crow Laws very well. Thank you for giving an explanation of what they are.

Puffer fish are interesting but I think you put a picture of the wrong fish. It's okay, it happens.
