ROBERt E LEE, THOMAS "STONEWALl" JACKSON, AND ANOTHER MYSTERY TOPIC

Originally opposed to Confederacy, considering the dissolution of the Union a calamity, Lee turned down an offer to lead the Union army and joined the Confederacy when his home state of Virginia succeeded. A brilliant tactician, Lee exhibited success against Union forces but lost the overall strategic battle and surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox on April 9th, 1865. Robert Edward Lee was the fourth child of Colonel Henry Lee and Ann Hill Carter. On both sides, his family had produced many of the dominant figures in the ruling class of Virginia. Lee's father, Henry Lee, had been a cavalry leader during the Revolution, a post-Revolution governor of Virginia, and the author of the famous congressional memorial eulogy to his friend, George Washington.

Thomas Jonathan Jackson was born on January 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, Virginia. He entered West Point in July 1842 and, in spite of his poor childhood education, worked hard to graduate seventeenth in his class in 1846. Upon graduation, Jackson was sent on military duty to Mexico, and continued his service in the United States Army in positions in New York and Florida. In 1851, Jackson became professor of artillery tactics and natural philosophy at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. He resigned from the army as of February 29, 1852. Jackson’s summer vacations from teaching were often in the north and Europe where his interests were aroused in art culture rather than military or political aspects.

Swordfish are large, highly migratory, predatory fish characterized by a long, flat bill in contrast to the smooth, round bill of the marlins. Swordfish are elongate, round-bodied, and lack teeth and scales as adults. They reach a maximum size of 14 ft (4.3 m) and 1,190 lb (540 kg). The International Game Fish Association's all-tackle angling record is a 1,182 lb (536 kg) fish taken off Chile in 1953.  They are the sole member of their family Xiphiidae.

  1. Andrea,

You wrote a informative paragraph on Robert E Lee. Great Job.

Your paragraph on Stonewall Jackson was interesting. I would have liked it if you would have told how he got his nickname, but you wrote great information on his life.

Swordfish are interesting animals. A picture would have been great for this since people may not know what a swordfish looks like.
